Byron Bay is the kind of place where every person you speak to seems to have some kind of amazing creative venture in the works. It’s pretty rare to find someone with a full-time office job, and when it comes to survival most people would rather spend their time foraging for berries in the woods than doing anything monotonous or unoriginal.
With a population full of these unconventional dreamers, it’s little wonder why Byron Bay has gained a reputation for having one of the most booming creative scenes in the world. Everywhere you look people are playing music in the streets, selling handmade jewellery or trading vintage clothing. The shops are bursting with local handicrafts and the Arts & Industrial Estate is packed with creative production spaces for local fashion labels, furniture designers, artists, musicians and foodies.
The natural buzz that this creative energy generates is undeniable, and those of us who are lucky enough to live here need to rally together to keep the buzz alive. Two very talented local designers Nisha Abey (Director of LIAR Swimwear) and Carolin Materna (Owner of ROVE) thought so too, which is why they dreamt up the very first Byron Bay Festival of Design to be held this Saturday the 17th of December. The main inspiration behind the festival was to create an opportunity for emerging businesses to showcase their work and engage with the community in a supportive space overflowing with Byron Bay’s famous good vibes. The girls have hand-selected 24 up and coming designers including A Beautiful Weirdo, Wilderness Road Art and Salia Jac, and have organised the perfect weekend event for those who love art and design, or who just want to relax and indulge their senses in the festival capital of Australia.
So ditch the Saturday morning garage sales and come and join Summersite at the inaugural Byron Bay Festival of Design. We’ll be getting our last minute Christmas shopping done and enjoying an amazing day out listening to live music, pigging out on delicious local snacks and getting our hair and makeup did, festival style.. Hope to see you there!
