Byron Bay Surf Festival // Our Top Picks

By Anna Jordan
Byron Bay, Australia
23/02/2017

The Byron Bay Surf Festival is a celebration of surf culture held annually in Australia’s surfing and creative capital. It’s a town that is known world over for its booming artistic scene, wild nightlife and relaxed surfing lifestyle - and if there’s ever a time to experience the very best of the Bay, the Surf Festival is it. From art markets to workshops, surf comps to film festivals, live music to VIP parties – the Byron Bay Surf Festival really is a party wave like no other. Not only is there endless fun to be had, it is also a melting pot of some of the most talented and interesting surf characters from around the globe.

The Summersite office and team are based in Byron Bay and we love opportunities like this where we can share its magic with the world. Join us this weekend for our Top 5 Festival Picks:

#1 - SUNSET CINEMA

The Sunset Cinema | Byron Bay Surf Festival @byronbaysurffestival

The Sunset Cinema | Byron Bay Surf Festival @byronbaysurffestival

There's something about watching movies in the great outdoors that's a little bit magical. On Friday the 24th of February, the Byron Bay Surf Festival will be hosting a Sunset Cinema on the Byron Bay Foreshore from 7pm-9:30pm. They'll be screening the Aussie Premiere of the film 'Given' starring Aamion Goodwin and family, 'The Way It Should Be' - a short film about the brewing process behind this year's BBSF X Stone & Wood collab featuring Dave Rastovich, plus heaps more..

Pack some friends, a picnic rug and a smorgasbord of your favourite snacks and join us tomorrow night for some sunset movie action.

#2 - SATURDAY SLIDE

Saturday Slide | Byron Bay Surf Festival @byronbaysurffestival

Saturday Slide | Byron Bay Surf Festival @byronbaysurffestival

This is the flagship event for the festival so if you haven't already got a ticket (it's sold out!), make sure you beg, plead and bargain as hard as you can to get one because it's going to be epic! The night will feature the incredible vocals of Paula Fuga, Bay local Bobby Alu and the hip-hopsque surf vibes of G.LOVE - fresh from the US. Between sets you can catch Jack McCoy's 25-year film anniversary, with clips from his groundbreaking surf films Bunyip Dreaming and The Green Iguana, and live music scores by Andrew Kidman, Dave Rastovich, Terepai Richmond, Tim Baker, Kyle Slabb and Fletcher Pilon.

Join us from 8pm-12:30am on Saturday the 25th of Feb at the Byron Bay Beach Hotel for some beers, some tunes and some all round great vibes.

#3 - SURF ART MARKETS

Surf Art Markets | Byron Bay Surf Festival @byronbaysurffestival

The Yoga Yurt | Byron Bay Surf Festival @byronbaysurffestival

On Saturday the 25th of Feb the Byron Bay Foreshore will be awash with market stalls, tipi pop-ups, shapers, yoga, artisans, workshops, raffles, films, presentations and live music. There are an amazing array of local and international businesses getting involved in this year's surf art markets so make sure you come down between 7am-4:30pm to check it out.

One of our favourite picks is the Patagonia Yurt Program. As if the word 'Yurt' hadn't already sold you on this, the program also features amazing films and presentations from some seriously inspiring ethical businesses, not-for-profits, surfers and activists:

9:30 - 10:00am:         One Wave's Founder Grant Trebilco
10:00 - 10:30am:       Take 3's Founder Tim Silverwood
10:30 - 11:30am:        Patagonia Freediver Kimi Werner
11:30 - 12pm:             Patagonia Surfer Belinda Baggs
12:00 - 1:00pm:         The Seabin Project Ambassador Sascha Chapman
1:00 - 1:30pm:           Ocean Zen Bikini's Founder Steph Gabriel
1:30 - 2:00pm:           1% For The Planet & 5 Ocean's Luise Grossman

If you want to learn to create shibori there's also a workshop at the Yoga Yurt from 2-4pm for $40 a pop.

#4 - THE ACTIVIST'S TOOLKIT

Dave Rastovich @daverastovich

On Saturday the 25th of Feb Patagonia is presenting a workshop and panel lead by legendary Byron Bay local Dave Rastovich. Rasta will be speaking with the most influential and experienced humanitarians and environmental activisits he has met along his 12 year conservation path, including Helen Norberg, Hugh De Kretzer (Human Rights Law Centre), Millie Telford and more. You'll walk away from this unique event with a clearer understanding of how care and compassion can be expressed both personally and politically, and how we can bolster our community and feel stronger than ever in solidarity. It's a seriously important topic and the panel welcome people of all ages, genders, religions, races and interests to get involved.

You can buy tickets up to 2 hours before the event so jump online and make sure you get a good seat because this is going to be some groundbreaking stuff.

#5 - THE PARTY WAVE DASH FOR CA$H

Party Wave Dash for Cash | Byron Bay Surf Fest @byronbaysurffestival

Wategos Beach is one of our favourite places in the world, and when the whole community gets down there to catch some waves together we guarantee that you're not going to be able to wipe the smile off your face. Presented by Clif Bar, this Sunday the 26th of February will be a melting pot of people of all ages and experience levels. There'll be fun competitions (no bad vibes here) being held from 8am-4pm in the following categories:

  • Finless
  • Logs
  • Mermaids
  • Fish
  • Torpedoes (Body Surfing)
  • Tandem
  • McTavish Trim

Bring your favourite and funnest surf craft and put yourself in the running to win $500 for the best Party Wave.

  2. The Whitsundays travel guide

"I''ve travelled around the world and the most beautiful place i have ever seen is in our backyard - the Whitsundays” - Emily Hutchinson @emelinaah
We planned a fun 8-day Whitsunday holiday filled with reef diving, island hopping, water activities and plenty of time to relax. The trip kicked off with three days in Airlie Beach which was enough time to chat to the locals and get the inside story on the best things to do and explore in the Whitsundays. Every conversation pointed to two things: a one-day Cruise Whitsundays dive trip to the outer Great Barrier Reef and a sea plane flight over Heart Reef and Whitehaven Beach with Air Whitsunday. Then we spent four leisurely days on a #gobareboating catamaran exploring the 74 Whitsunday Islands. Thanks to our very own skipper (a local who knew just the right places), we stumbled across our own secret beaches, found hidden gems and watched the tropical Whitsunday world go by. Our trip ended with an overnight stay on glorious Hamilton Island - and a chance to mix water sports and hiking activities with chill outs by the resort pool and enjoy quality restaurant and cocktail time.
