The 3 Amigos Part 2

By Lily Keenan | Featuring Kelia Moniz, Bruna Schmitz and Monyca Eleogram
Byron Bay, Australia
20/03/2016

Roxy surfers, best mates and self proclaimed #3Amigos, Kelia Moniz, Bruna Schmitz and Monyca Eleogram arrived on Australian soil last week. So Summersite gathered a crew, filled the esky, strapped the roof with more boards than legally recommended and hit the road, chasing waves and adventure up the northern east coast of Australia.

A friend of ours knew a place that hardly anyone went to, a beach where you can drive along the sand for miles and miles. But a spot like that needed a proper set up, primarily a set of dope-ass wheels. It was a problem for about ten minutes until we ran into another old friend in the car park at the Pass. Handshakes were distributed, yarns were had, and suddenly we had a Land Rover Defender that was not unlike what Jeff Goldblum drove to get away from dinosaurs in Jurassic Park.

So we flipped the bird at Byron Bay and all it’s flat, rainy, greyness and went hell for leather along the coast in our freshly acquired outback truck. Through twisting dirt tracks and increasingly thicker jungle, we drove further and further away from bad weather and big crowds until we reached an endless, pristine beach.

Sitting on the roof of a truck that’s speeding at 60km an hour isn’t exactly advisory behaviour, but neither is paddling out into 10ft Teahupoo on a longboard. So there wasn’t a chance we were going to talk the girls down from the top as we roared along the white sand of our secret beach.

Anyone paddling into Teahupoo on a longboard would have to be mad, and watching the footage of her wipeout you can’t help but think that maybe Kelia is... She shrugs it off with a cheeky smile.

Our set up on the beach was epic. The sun beat down on our tent and there wasn’t another person in sight.

Beach bums - it was hard not to feel like we’d stumbled onto our own private daydream
Photo - Carly Brown

This feeling was confirmed when a figure materialized out of the mist. It was our Byron friends from Vallkree electric bikes, they’d sniffed us out and provided extra wheels for the low tide. How thoughtful

Now the challenge was on, major points went to Bruna for her commitment to seagull hunting but Monyca took the prize for the classiest beach burn-outs.

If we turned our backs for a second the Amigos would be up to some kind of mischief, throwing handstands in between takes or dancing on top of the Land Rover.

We didn’t know it yet, but we were in for some waves (finally), a welcome visit from a free surfing legend, and a thoroughly unwelcome visit from a man in a grey suit.

Stay tuned for more tales from the #ROXYxSummersite adventure.

  2. The Whitsundays travel guide

"I''ve travelled around the world and the most beautiful place i have ever seen is in our backyard - the Whitsundays” - Emily Hutchinson @emelinaah
We planned a fun 8-day Whitsunday holiday filled with reef diving, island hopping, water activities and plenty of time to relax. The trip kicked off with three days in Airlie Beach which was enough time to chat to the locals and get the inside story on the best things to do and explore in the Whitsundays. Every conversation pointed to two things: a one-day Cruise Whitsundays dive trip to the outer Great Barrier Reef and a sea plane flight over Heart Reef and Whitehaven Beach with Air Whitsunday. Then we spent four leisurely days on a #gobareboating catamaran exploring the 74 Whitsunday Islands. Thanks to our very own skipper (a local who knew just the right places), we stumbled across our own secret beaches, found hidden gems and watched the tropical Whitsunday world go by. Our trip ended with an overnight stay on glorious Hamilton Island - and a chance to mix water sports and hiking activities with chill outs by the resort pool and enjoy quality restaurant and cocktail time.
